University and Community Service
Lawrence has been on the Special Projects Committee of the Singapore
Tertiary English Teachers’ Society (STETS), working closely
with colleagues from other institutions of higher education in Singapore. The
Committee's recent effort has made it possible for STETS members to have met Professor Paul Nation
from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand,
who presented a STETS Public Lecture and a 2.5-day
STETS
Seminar on Learning and Teaching Vocabulary at NUS Guild House
in 2002. The highlight of the Committee's effort is the STETS 21st
Anniversary Celebration Workshop by Dr David Nunan,
Professor of English from the University of Hong Kong, HKSAR, on the topic
"Developing Materials for ELT: An Analytic Approach", 28-29
November 2003, Singapore
Polytechnic Graduates' Guild.
He has served as
Honorary Treasurer for ELLTA(S)
- The English Language & Literature
Teachers'
Association (Singapore). An important event he has coordinated (as Chairman of the
Organising Committee) was STU-ELLTA(S) Seminar 2002 held on 13th
April, Saturday at Metropolitan
YMCA at Stevens Road, Singapore. Click here for a report on this event.
A recent international
conference he is organising as the Chair of the Organising Committee is the 13th
International Conference on English in Southeast Asia Conference (ESEA 2008), to be held in
Singapore, 4 -6 December, 2008.
Also working in the
portfolio as Chairman of Conferences/ Seminars, ELLTAS, he
coordinates the Annual STU-ELLTA(S) Seminar. More details of

ELLTA(S) - The English
Language & Literature Teachers' Association (Singapore). Currently,
Lawrence is the Institutional Representative of SAAL (Singapore
Association for Applied Linguistics) for the National Institute of
Education, Singapore.
